There are millions of people throughout the world who are searching for God. They seek to find Him in different ways and different places. They look for God through the eyes of a moralist, in the face of a child, in philanthropic humanitarianism, and in world religions. Books written by men have impeded the progress in this quest for God. The writings of Confucius, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, denominationalism, and the Catholic Church have brought about confusion. Yet, God can be found if one just looks to the means that He has provided for this search. God has given man the Scriptures so man can be complete in his knowledge about God. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16,17).
It is in the Scriptures that man can learn about the nature of God. God is love. “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love” (1 John 4:8). God is merciful, kind, and gracious (Exodus 34:6; Luke 6:35; Numbers 14:18).
Justice is one of His attributes. Justice is as much a part of His character as goodness, love, mercy, kindness, and righteousness. It is written, “Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face” (Psalm 89:14). God’s judgment is just because it is according to truth. Those who reject the truth of God will receive their just reward, “but unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath” (Romans 2:8). Therefore, God is both good and just. Paul teaches about the goodness and the severity of God. “Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off” (Romans 11:22).
This study will focus on the Goodness of God. It is a reality that God is good. Jesus taught this to a young wealthy ruler (Matthew 19:16-22; Mark 10:17-22; Luke 18:18-23). The man was interested in eternal life and came to Jesus saying, “… Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 18:18). Jesus responded to the young ruler by teaching that only God is good. The young ruler had used the word “good” to describe Jesus as a teacher. The Lord taught him a very important lesson, that only God was good. Jesus was not denying His deity, as some in false religions teach, but directing the young ruler to the conclusion that He is deity, more than a good teacher or good man. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit possess goodness perfectly.
DEFINITION OF GOODNESS
The word “good” can be used in many different ways. An honest man is often described as being good. One may have many good friends or good neighbors. There are many things that are good. A computer can be good because it is useful in writing or research. An automobile can be called good because it is used as it was designed to carry people from one spot to another.
During the creation week God called many things good. God saw everything that He had made and pronounced it very good. “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day” (Genesis 1:31). Good is used in this sense to describe that everything God created was fulfilling its purpose for which it was made.
Good is also used to describe moral goodness. In this rationale the goodness of God is described. David used this type of logic in describing the moral character of God. He said, “Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way” (Psalm 25:8). In this wonderful verse one can see that God provides instructions for man to walk the pathway of righteousness. Those who are in sin can be freed from their guilt and iniquity, if they humbly obey the instructions of God. The goodness of God has provided the way of escape.
GOOD IS TRANSLATED FROM THE GREEK
"Agathos “ describes that which, being ‘good’ in its character or constitution, is beneficial in its effect.”(1) Goodness means that which is moral, ethical, righteous, and faultless in and of itself. God is the only one who is the sum total of all perfection. Therefore, goodness is an attribute of God!
DISTORTED CONCEPTIONS OF GOD
There were many confusing and deceptive perceptions of God in antiquity and in existence today. There were people in all ages who have pictured God as cruel, vengeful, and as an oppressor of mankind. They think of Him as bloodthirsty, ready to destroy a life to appease His rage.
Some have attributed the death of an innocent child to the will of God. A child is killed in an extremely horrible accident and someone says, “It was God’s will.” Those who speak such blasphemy have a distorted view of God. Their profane, contemptuous speech and irreverent conception of God cause many to turn from the one who is able to save and protect. A distorted conception of God will blind the eye to His kindness, love and goodness.
Some others have gone to the opposite extreme and picture God as a kind, “Old Grandfather,” whose love for man is so great that He will not punish those who are wicked, living in sin. It is true that God is “Love,” as stated above, but He has other attributes that make up His character such as: kindness, mercy, grace, forgiveness and justice describe the Creator of the world and mankind. God’s justice demands that man receive blessings in obedience to Him and punishment to all who live in rebellion. It is written, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting” (Galatians 6:7,8).
The distorted views of God and His character do not change Him. It is in the best interest of man to seek out from the Scriptures information about God that shows He is both good and just.
THE GOODNESS OF GOD IS MANIFESTED IN THE GIVING OF JESUS
God’s goodness is manifested toward all mankind in the giving of Jesus for the remission of sins. Paul said, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). God demonstrated His love toward mankind while man was His enemy living in sin, rebellious against the standard God has set for him to live by. Jesus died for all sinners. Man did not merit this wonderful gift of salvation. Man was not a friend of God, but an enemy hopelessly lost in sin. Jesus died because it was a necessity for man to be able to enjoy the blessings that are only in God.
James declared in his epistle that “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17). The glorious gift of His Son should motivate all to obedience. In his epistle to the church at Rome, the apostle Paul wrote, “Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” (Romans 2:4). In the context of Romans chapter two, Paul was speaking to the Jews. The goodness of God should be seen in what Jesus had done for all, but the Jews showed contempt for the goodness of God in their rejection of God’s only begotten Son. The Jews are not the only ones to show contempt for the goodness of God. Everyone who turns his back on the Lord Jesus despises the goodness of God.
Yet, the goodness of God is seen while the Gospel is being preached throughout the world. The goodness of God is leading some men to repentance. Therefore, man has a choice to make between the goodness of God offered through Christ Jesus and the punishment for sins for those who turn their backs on His kindness and love. Every person will make this choice in his life. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
THE GOODNESS OF GOD IS MANIFESTED IN THE CHURCH OF CHRIST
The goodness of God is seen in the establishment of spiritual family of God, the church of Christ. Jesus defined the spiritual family when He said, “For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother” (Mark 3:35). This refutes the teaching that the church is not important. It has been said that the physical family is the foundation of society. In it one should learn about kindness, love, righteousness, and goodness. It is the spiritual family that put all these characteristics into action in following Jesus. It may take leaving all to be in the Lord’s church. Jesus said that He would bring division in the physical family. “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26). The apostle Peter stated they had forsaken all to follow Jesus. “Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee” (Mark 10:28). Jesus said that families forsaken for Him would be returned a hundred times as much as they lost.
“And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life” (Mark 10:29,30).
When one has any loss of family for the sake of following Christ, he will receive a greater return. The Christian family is number one because of love for Jesus and the church of Christ. This in no way permits the abandonment of the fleshly family. One still has the responsibility to care for those in one’s biological family. But we must never let fleshly relations come between the Lord Jesus and us!
Because of the family relationship within the Lord’s church, each Christian is encouraged to overcome the hardships, sicknesses, disappointments, hatred, and wickedness of the world. God has provided this wonderful relationship that is good for mankind. Therefore, the goodness of God is manifested in the church of Christ.
All one has to do is think of the difficulty, uncertainty, and the perplexity in the life of each person on earth today, in the history of mankind for the past two thousand years, and in the future of mankind. God provided the church through the blood of His Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ. His sacrifice is good for the future of man because it is through Jesus that one can attain Heaven.
Most people have a perverted concept of the church and Christianity by dividing into different denominations and cults, accepting false creeds thus destroying the goodness God has provided in the unity of Christians in the one true church. Because some have corrupted the pattern for the church, it does not invalidate God’s will or goodness within the community of true, faithful Christians.
The goodness of God and the benefits He has provided are limited only to those who abide in the teaching of Christ. It is written:
“Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son” (2 John 9).
This means all the Lord’s teaching and not just a few verses taken out of context. The goodness of God is available to all in the church of Christ, but nothing short of complete surrender to Christ will obtain it.
THE GOODNESS OF GOD IS MANIFESTED IN DISCIPLINE
Discipline is a word that is annoying, obnoxious and accursed to the world. Most people do not want to be disciplined. Discipline will restrict the actions of the immoral; discipline will train those who are out of control; discipline will lead to an orderly life. When God disciplines man it is for the good of man.
In the book of Hebrews one can learn that God disciplines those He loves. “And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him” (Hebrews 12:5).
"Chastening is for the benefit of the one being disciplined. It is the process of freeing one from faults and sin. Chastening refines and builds up character. Discipline is not always punishment for sin. Jesus is the supreme example. His life was without sin, yet He suffered many things for mankind in obedience to God the Father. The Hebrew writer stated that “though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:8,9).
The Lord’s pattern of perfect obedience led to suffering and death on the cross. “To learn obedience, as here, implies the tasting of every consequence of obedience. The savage antagonisms of a sinful and rebellious world against all truth and honor were pointed squarely against Him who knew no sin.”(2) God required obedience of His “only begotten Son;” He will discipline those who are in His spiritual family, the church of Christ, by adoption.
God disciplines those He loves. “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth” (Hebrews 12:6). It is by the means of discipline that God trains His children. Those who are not corrected are not His children. The lack of discipline of a father is a sign of illegitimacy. It is written, “But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons” (Hebrews 12:8). The chastening of God will produce patience, character, and hope. Paul said, “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope” (Romans 5:3,4). Paul could rejoice in the chastening of God because of the effect it had on his life and soul. Therefore, the goodness of God is seen in the chastening and discipline of His children. It is not God’s will that Christians overindulge in the luxuries of the world, but that they walk in righteousness doing His will.
THE GOODNESS OF GOD IS MANIFESTED IN JUSTIFICATION
Justice is an attribute of God. In the letter to the Galatians Paul warns all mankind about the justice of God. The wicked will not go unpunished. “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting” (Galatians 6:7,8). They will receive the fury of God’s wrath at judgment.
“And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).
The Bible teaches that all mankind (men and women--but not babies) are sinners. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The wages of sin is death, which is eternal separation from God in Hell. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Therefore, man is in need of justification. The goodness of God is manifested in Him providing justification for man.
Justification is defined as “The act of pronouncing righteous, justification, acquittal ... signifying the establishment of a person as just by acquittal from guilt.”(3) It is a judicial act of God absolving the sinner from his sin through Jesus Christ. Man can be freed from the penalty of sin. This comes about through the goodness of God. It must be noted that the justification of God has limitation; a person cannot live in sin and expect justification. To be just before God one must be in obedience to His will. It is written: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Obedience to the Gospel is the doorway to the justification of God; the Gospel is the power of God to save. This is why the apostle Paul could say by inspiration, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).
God justifies by charging the sin of man to Christ Jesus, who knew no sin, and credits righteousness to man. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). God did not spare His Son from humiliation, pain, anguish and death. Jesus was the sacrificial offering for sins. Jesus died to pay a debt He did not owe or make, the sin debt of the whole world. Goodness was manifested in God in giving Jesus on that cruel cross of Calvary so man could be justified before Him. Thus it is written, “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:2).
Christianity is unequaled and unrivaled because of the doctrine of justification. When God justifies, He charges the sin of man by grace to Jesus and credits the righteousness of the Lord Jesus to all who obey the Gospel.
Justification is attained by faith. Jesus paid the price for man’s justification. It is through faith that one receives this justification. This does not mean that man receives justification without obedience to God’s Word. One cannot be made just before God until he has obeyed all the teaching of Christ Jesus. Those who reject the teaching of Jesus are not justified before God. “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son” (2 John 9).
Man would be lost in the darkness of sin without hope, without a future, without true joy, and without eternal life if the goodness of God did not provide justification. Thank God for the wonderful, marvelous and loving act of justification.
THE GOODNESS OF GOD IS MANIFESTED IN HIS HATRED OF SIN
The heinousness of sin is seen by looking to Calvary and the violent death of His only begotten son. The evil that man inflicted on Jesus was prophesied through the prophets. David spoke of the Lord’s suffering about one thousand years before the Lord’s suffering and death.
“Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture” (Psalm 22:12-18).
The prophet Isaiah prophesied about the suffering and death of the Messiah for man’s sin about 700 years before Jesus’ birth.
“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:3-12).
Zechariah was another prophet who spoke of the blood of Jesus flowing at Calvary. He stated that the Lord’s blood would be as a fountain going forth to cleanse man from sin.
“In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness” (Zechariah 13:1). These prophecies of the violent death of God’s Son teach us about the heinousness of sin.
Sin separates man from God because God is righteous and would never tolerate wickedness. Daniel proclaimed the righteousness of God in punishing the Jews for sins. “Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice” (Daniel 9:14).
Sin is the breaking of God’s standard, His law, thus putting a person or a nation into a lawless state. “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4). The Jews often rebelled against God’s law and He would turn His eyes from them. He would not hear their prayers. This was the condition of many of most of the Jews during the time of Isaiah.
“Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:1,2).
Man living in sin has no hope, eternal joy, or future. He deserves eternal suffering in that place called Hell. The goodness of God is manifested in His hatred of sins in that He does not want the wicked to die and suffer eternal punishment. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Yet, God will not force anyone to obey Him. He has provided the way of escape from sins and the wages of wickedness through the blood of Christ Jesus. Man is required to obey the Lord in order to attain salvation. “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 1:8).
The Scriptures are very unmistakable, unambiguous, and unequivocal in the teaching of God’s hatred of sin and His goodness in providing the way of salvation.
THE GOODNESS OF GOD IS MANIFESTED IN MARRIAGE
In the beginning of time when God created man, Adam had no one equal to him to have fellowship and enjoy intimate relationships. “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18). God made man a social being and he needed woman to be complete, one who was comparable to him. Therefore, the first marriage was recorded taking place in the Garden of Eden. They were to serve God together in unity and singleness of heart. God joined man and woman together and they became one flesh (Genesis 2:24).
What constitutes the goodness in marriage? God’s establishing it makes it good. He would not establish anything that is not good. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17). Marriage is good for both man and woman. Marriage is good for social interaction. It is good for procreation. When God made Adam and Eve, He said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28).
The writer of the book of Hebrews said, “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge” (Hebrews 13:4). Marriage is honorable because God instituted it for man. It is honorable because it prevents impurity. Marriage is also honorable because of the goodness found in it for man and woman. Too, it is honorable because of the fruit that comes from it, children.
Finally, marriage is honorable because Jesus honored it. When Jesus was in the region of Judea, the Pharisees came to Him asking, “The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?” (Matthew 19:3). This was the world’s concept of marriage, then and today. Divorce is the destruction of that which is good in the sight of God. Jesus pointed the Pharisees to the beginning when God instituted the first marriage.
“And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so” (Matthew 19:4-8).
Man and woman are joined together in marriage by God and no one but God can separate that union. The only way God allows the marriage bond to be broken and another marriage take place is in the case of fornication. “And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery” (Matthew 19:9).
The goodness of marriage is seen in God’s hatred of divorce. It is written, "For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously" (Malachi 2:16). Divorce destroys that which is precious, beloved, and invaluable to man and society. God hates sin!
Therefore, when people destroy marriage, except in the case of fornication, they are sinning. It is a tragedy that in many churches of Christ today some Christians are defending divorce, the very thing which God hates. Yes, it is possible for one to divorce and marry again as stated above, but even in the case of fornication that should be the last resort. The church and society needs men and women who are committed to making marriage successful! Men and women who will not deal treacherously with each other are needed. Men and women who see the goodness of God in marriage and all the blessings a couple can enjoy for a life-time are needed.
The goodness of God is proclaimed and manifested in so many ways. God does not delight in the death of sinners, so He gave Jesus to die for all. Therefore, all mankind can have access to salvation. The goodness of God is manifested and proclaimed in the church of Christ. The Lord’s church is made of the righteous, who are seeking to please their heavenly Father. God’s goodness is seen and demonstrated in discipline. He loves those who are in His family, the church.
Discipline prepares one to live with God. The justification of God declares that He is good. The goodness of God is experienced in marriage when families spend a lifetime together encouraging one another and helping each other attain Heaven. The goodness of God is manifested in His hatred of sin because sin destroys the soul and separates man from God.
There would be no beauty, joy, peace, and comfort without God’s attribute of goodness. It should motivate all to live holy lives. It should be the desire of all people to follow Christ’s example to do good and avoid evil. This can happen if one loves God. “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37). God directs mankind through His Word, toward that which can fulfill and bring true happiness along the journey of life.
God’s holiness requires punishment for sin. His goodness and love teach us that He is ready to forgive and show mercy to all who obey. Does the goodness of God influence you to be good, looking to Jesus and the terms of the Gospel for salvation?
